EGEDA UruguayEGEDA Conference

Law of the media and to foster national film production: the European experience.

The public policies to support the audiovisual sector implemented in the European Union in the last twenty years have had a positive impact on the sector’s growth and the emergence of a solid industrial fabric. With a series of examples, the Spanish lawyer José Antonio Suárez Losano will analyze the main sector regulations in force in Europe and their contribution to the growth of audiovisual production in that continent.

José Antonio Suárez is a partner and co-director of Suárez de la Dehesa Abogados, a law firm that specializes in audiovisual contents and formats, information technologies and legal rights in the culture and entertainment sectors. He is also general secretary of the audiovisual producers rights management body and he participated actively in the setting up of the arbitration court to defend audiovisual rights in Latin America (IBERMEDIA). He is a recognized expert in this field and he has given courses and lectures in Uruguay and internationally. His outstanding publications are “Introduction to audiovisual rights”, “The legal regime for Audiovisual co-productions”, “Tax incentives for audiovisual production and co-production in Latin America, Canada and the USA.” (the chapter about Spain), and “Spanish intellectual property jurisprudence”.

EGEDA Uruguay is a collective management body whose field is the management, representation, protection and defense of the producers of audiovisual products, and those of right-holders regardless of their nationality or country of residence. EGEDA Uruguay was set up in 2003 as a non profit making civil association that manages rights a producer cannot administer individually, and that are the object of the activity of collective management. This includes the different modalities of public communication rights like re-transmission on cable and satellite and communication in places open to the public.
