Documentary Week is a DocMontevideo space for showing films. Every day a new film will be presented by its director and shown.

This event is open to the general public and admission is free of charge. At the end of each film showing there will be a participative dialogue between the film makers and members of the audience.

The program for the showings will be announced in the near future.

Synopsis: Mauricio thinks the best way to be a lifeguard is to never go in the water, and he takes preventive measures so nobody will ever drown. The problem is that he works on the most dangerous beach in Chile and the people who go there ignore him, they just want to forget that all year they have to obey orders. Nothing is hidden, we see everything, we spy on the whole show and the tragedies.

Awards and festivals: Salvavidas won the public prize in the national and international category at the Valdivia International Film Festival, and also the jury special prize at the Guadalajara Festival. It premiered at First Appearance IDFA 2011, and has been shown at many festivals including BAFICI, Full Frame, the Toulouse Latin Film Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, the Valdivia International Film Festival, FIDOCS and the Guadalajara Festival.

Synopsis: Every day in the maternity section in state hospitals in Bogotá hundreds of women give birth. The medical facilities are saturated, immersed in their routines, and they cannot deal effectively with these families’ needs. In almost all cases the mothers are alone with no one to give them affection or sympathy. Birth shows this theatrical scene of the old conflict between two antagonists: human beings against machines. And we are in the middle.

In 2010, during its development stage, it won the prize for Best Project at Doc Buenos Aires.

Synopsis: Aquí se construye retrata la desaparición del barrio residencial de un biólogo, uno de los pocos vecinos nativos que todavía vive en una casa de la zona. Él se convierte en protagonista obligado de este documental. Rodeado de edificios, ve impotente como el ruido, las sombras y el asfalto van arrinconando su hogar. Esta supuesta modernidad arquitectónica es una forma de dominación, no sólo porque destruyen una morfología, sino porque liquida un modo de vida, atacando la memoria emotiva de la capital. Toda ciudad se ve obligada a mutar, pero resulta incomprensible que sea destruyendo el paisaje de su infancia.

Synopsis: Nivia, a woman of 90, comes up against an unexpected change of circumstances. She has lived with her daughter Alicia for decades but now, after years of widowhood, Alicia finds a new husband and she naturally wants to move in with him. Nivia is opposed to this relationship and she accuses her daughter of abandoning her. The two women enter into a serious and revealing conflict in which the daughter’s pursuit of new love comes up against the mother’s fear of growing old alone. The director, who is Nivia’s grandson and Alicia’s son, succeeds in remaining on the sidelines and capturing the inevitable pain of separation in a very subtle way, almost as if the story were fiction.

It was shown at the 16th Santiago de Chile International Documentary Festival (Fidocs 2012), where it was awarded as Best Latinamerican Film, the 14th Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI 2012) and at the “Primera copia” Latin American Selection at the Havana Festival (Cuba, 2010).
