21 and 22 July: Seminar on creation documentaries
With Marta Andreu

After analyzing the portrait as a basic expression in the documentary perspective (DocMontevideo 2009), and after examining representation as the trace of what once was (DocMontevideo 2010), and after asking ourselves how what we film shows us where we are and anchors the place we are looking from (DocMontevideo 2011), this year Marta Andreu will again reflect on creation documentary, but from a different perspective.

What contemplates us. Transformation as expression in contemporary documentaries

“The most beautiful images and the most sublime notes are composed and they decompose. Only one remains, great beauty that passes from one form to another, in constant opening, in constant change, although it is true that we cannot retain it forever…” in Lenz by Georg Buchner.

To look is to participate in what we are looking at. Not only because our film perspective is included in it, but also because the person who looks shares in the world he films, in what there is, and in what moves in front of his camera.

To capture this movement is to transmit what goes through us when we see it, when we experience it, when we let ourselves be touched by it. To attain this representation we construct in images and sound the same relations between the things in the world that we capture with the camera, and so we become in a way measurers of distances, sensitive capturers of what there is between other things. And therefore we become transmitters of what these relations arouse in us, and this arousal is a change, a transformation. What we film changes before our eyes, and we change as we look at it.

What we show is not reality. And nor is our view of things. Reality cannot be dissociated from looking. What we show is a link. What inevitably characterizes it is that it is in a constant state of change. Our desire to trap it and fix it in images will not be satisfied. And it is precisely for this reason that we will never stop activating it and being driven by it: we will not stop showing. This impossible attempt to change moves us, it appeals to us; it is a transformation that is in front of and also behind the camera, speaking of the world. And also of us.

Nacer (Birth) by Jorge Caballero

Nacer FotoSynopsis: Every day in the maternity section in state hospitals in Bogotá hundreds of women give birth. The medical facilities are saturated, immersed in their routines, and they cannot deal effectively with these families’ needs. In almost all cases the mothers are alone with no one to give them affection or sympathy. Rise and Shine shows this theatrical scene of the old conflict between two antagonists: human beings against machines. And we are in the middle.

Las flores de mi familia (My family’s flowers) by Juan Ignacio Fernández

Las Flores de mi familiaSynopsis: Nivia, a woman of 90, comes up against an unexpected change of circumstances. She has lived with her daughter Alicia for decades but now, after years of widowhood, Alicia finds a new husband and she naturally wants to move in with him. Nivia is opposed to this relationship and she accuses her daughter of abandoning her. The two women enter into a serious and revealing conflict in which the daughter’s pursuit of new love comes up against the mother’s fear of growing old alone. The director, who is Nivia’s grandson and Alicia’s son, succeeds in remaining on the sidelines and capturing the inevitable pain of separation in a very subtle way, almost as if the story were fiction.

El salvavidas (The Lifeguard) by Maite Alberdi

Foto el salvavidas webSynopsis: Mauricio thinks the best way to be a lifeguard is to never go in the water, and he takes preventive measures so nobody will ever drown. The problem is that he works on the most dangerous beach in Chile and the people who go there ignore him, they just want to forget that all year they have to obey orders. Nothing is hidden, we see everything, we spy on the whole show and the tragedies.
