
Rough Cut Lab
ROUGH CUT LAB is an activity that takes place at DocMontevideo aimed to editors with the focus of reflecting on the assembly process and the role of editor, from the analysis of two documentaries in postproduction.
ROUGH CUT LAB 2022
The assembly laboratory, Rough Cut Lab, is a training program for assemblers. The activity is divided into a master class reviewing the work of the tutor editor, an analysis instance for which 2 documentary projects in the process of editing are selected and a meeting for dialogue between editors. You will be able to participate in the workshop through two modalities, as an observant editor (35 places) or applying for a project in the assembly phase (2 places).
The activities will take place on July 20, 21 and 22. Registrations for observer editors will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Rough Cut Lab will be conducted in Spanish. There will only be simultaneous translation into English in the master class, the returns and the group activity for editors will be in Spanish and will not have translation.
The inscriptions of films in the editing process are closed. We will soon announce the selected projects.

Mentor: Gustavo Vasco

Gustavo Vasco
Gustavo Vasco (Colombia) is an anthropologist from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota (2005) and filmmaker from La Femis film school in Paris (2010), Gustavo Vasco has worked as an editor on multiple film and television projects that have traveled the world in various festivals and exhibition platforms. In the documentary field he has worked on the feature films “Todo comenzó por el fin” by Luis Ospina, “Pizarro” by Simón Hernández, “Amazona” by Clare Weiskopf and Nicolás Van Hemelryck, “Señorita María, la falda de la montaña” by Rubén Mendoza, “La casa de Mama Icha”, by Oscar Molina, “Suspensión” by Simón Uribe, “Cantos que inunda el río” by Germán Arango and “Amor rebelde” by Alejandro Bernal. He was also the chief editor of the Netflix original documentary “Diomedes, el ídolo, el misterio y la tragedia”. He recently edited with Anne Fabini the new project by Clare Weiskopf and Nicolás Van Hemelryck, “”Alis”, which premiered at the Berlinale 2022 where it won the Teddy Award in the documentary category and the Crystal Bear in the Generation section. For the film “Todo comenzó por el fin”, he was awarded the Macondo Award – given by the Colombian Film Academy – for best editing in 2016. With “Amazona” he again received the Macondo award for best editing in 2018. He has served as a professor at the Film School of the National University of Colombia, the Central University in Bogota, the Javeriana University in Bogota and the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. He is a founding member of the Colombian film festival in Paris “El perro que ladra” and is a founding member of the Colombian Association of film editors E.C.C.A.

CALL for the Rough Cut Lab:
Call for observer editors to participate in the Rough Cut Lab of DocMontevideo online 2022 that will take place on July 20, 21 and 22.
Eligibility: You can apply to the Rough Cut Lab in two ways:
1- With a documentary in the post-production stage that has a cut of the film. The dynamic proposes the viewing of the material presented, on which the tutor will work analyzing the construction of the story. The participation of the editor is mandatory and the participation of the director is also recommended. For the selection process, the cut can be sent without subtitles as long as it is in Spanish or Portuguese. In the case of a third language, it must have subtitles in Spanish or Portuguese. Once the application is selected, a copy subtitled in Spanish will be required. The inscriptions of films in the editing process are closed. We will soon announce the selected projects
2 -As an observer. The observers will be able to be present in the personalized work instances, they will have access to the dialogue with the tutor and they will be able to participate in the discussions. Up to 35 participants will be selected under this modality. Professionals who perform post-production tasks may also apply.
Registration to the Rough Cut Lab provides: – Access to the Rough Cut Lab in each of its modalities 1) with film or 2) as an observer editor. – Access to all the activities of the Documentary Seminar.
Registration cost: The cost of accreditation as an observer to the Rough Cut Lab is USD 65 and offers access to the Documentary Seminar. In Uruguay, the cost of registration for members of CADU, ASOPROD and Organized Editors of Uruguay is USD 55-. The cost of registration with a film to the Rough Cut Lab is USD 180-. Registration offers 3 accreditations (director, editor and producer) to access RCL activities, includes access to Meetings with meetings coordinated by the organization and access to the Documentary Seminar. In Uruguay, the cost of registration for members of ASOPROD and Organized Editors of Uruguay is USD150- after the 3rd accredited, for the following representatives of the film the cost is USD50.
Payment can be made electronically through PayPal, or from Uruguay by bank transfer. Once the selected documentaries have been confirmed, an email will be sent with the payment instructions. The term to make the payment is 7 calendar days from the notification that the content was selected. Failure to pay will imply the rejection of the film and the selection of a new project.
