ROUGH CUT LAB is an activity that takes place at DocMontevideo aimed to editors with the focus of reflecting on the assembly process and the role of editor, from the analysis of two documentaries in postproduction.

ROUGH CUT LAB 2023

The editting laboratory, Rough Cut Lab, is a training program for assemblers. The activity is divided into a master class reviewing the work of the tutor editor, an analysis instance for which 2 documentary projects in the process of editing are selected and a meeting for dialogue between editors. You will be able to participate in the workshop through two modalities, as an observant editor (35 places) or applying for a project in the assembly phase (2 places).

The activity will take place between July 25 and 27 in person in Montevideo. Participants will have access to the Documentary Seminar and the Documentary Week Exhibitions between July 24 and 28 in Montevideo. Registration for Observing Editors will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis until all places are exhausted.

The Rough Cut Lab will be held in Spanish.

Guillermo Madeiro

Guille Madeiro (Uruguay, 1984). Montajista y director. Dirigió con Federico Borgia El campeón del mundo (2019) y Clever (2015). Trabajó como montador de más de 20 largometrajes como El Retrato de mi padre, Bosco, Carmín, Tres Hermanas,  Dizer Adeus, entre otros. Es licenciado en Comunicación Social y docente de montaje.

In each analysis session, one of the selected films will be viewed with the presence of the editor, director and the editors who participate as observers. The tutor will offer feedback and engage in a dialogue with the representatives of the film, delving into the editing process that each documentary is going through to identify problems and narrative solutions. – Exclusive activity for RCL participants

CALL for the Rough Cut Lab:

Call for observer editors to participate in the face-to-face DocMontevideo 2023 Rough Cut Lab that will take place on July 25, 26 and 27.

Eligibility: You can apply to the Rough Cut Lab in two modalities:

1- With a documentary in the post-production stage that has a cut from the film. The dynamic proposes the viewing of the material presented, on which the tutor will work analyzing the construction of the story. The participation of the editor is mandatory and the participation of the director is also recommended. For the selection process, the cut can be sent without subtitles as long as it is in Spanish or Portuguese. In the case of a third language, it must have subtitles in Spanish or Portuguese. Once the application is selected, a copy subtitled in Spanish may be required depending on the tutor.

2 -As an observer. Observing editors will be able to be present in the custom work instances, will have access to the dialog with the tutor and will be able to participate in the discussions. Up to 35 participants will be selected under this modality. Professionals who perform post-production tasks may also apply.

Registration for the Rough Cut Lab provides: – Access to the Rough Cut Lab in each of its modalities 1) with film or 2) as an observing editor. – Access to all the activities of the Documentary Seminar and Documentary Week in Montevideo.

Registration cost: The cost of accreditation as an observer to the Rough Cut Lab is USD 65 and offers access to the Documentary Seminar. In Uruguay, the cost of registration for members of ASOPROD, Organized Publishers of Uruguay and SAE (Argentina) is USD 55-. The cost of registration with film to the Rough Cut Lab is USD 180-. Registration offers 3 accreditations (director, editor and producer) to access RCL activities, includes access to Meetings with meetings coordinated by the organization and access to the Documentary Seminar. In Uruguay, the cost of registration for members of ASOPROD and Organized Publishers of Uruguay is USD150- after the 3rd accredited, for the following representatives of the film the cost is USD50.

Payment may be made electronically through PayPal, or from Uruguay by bank transfer. Once the selected documentaries have been confirmed, an email will be sent with the payment instructions. The term to make the payment is 7 calendar days from the notification that the content was selected. Failure to pay will imply the dismissal of the film and the selection of a new project.

João Victor (age 12) is at the peak of his career, preaching to ever larger crowds. Happy, he hopes that preaching will provide him with a better life. Daniel’s fate, bitter at the end of his career, haunts him.
